Self-Worth and Net Worth: Unlearning the Tie Between Value and Income

Self-Worth and Net Worth: Unlearning the Tie Between Value and Income

Somewhere along the way, we started confusing our bank balance with our value as a person. Hustle culture, social media, and the pressure to “monetise everything” have made it easy to link success to income—but at what cost? At Dandy, we’re exploring the messy overlap between self-worth and net worth, and how to start untangling your identity from your payslip. Because your value was never meant to be measured in numbers.

Money is a bit like avocado toast. Delicious, desirable, and somehow always linked to how we measure success — especially in the wellness world. Whether it’s influencers talking six-figure launches, finance bros bragging about portfolios, or subtle comparisons between who holidays where, one message keeps coming through: you are what you earn.

But here's the thing — you’re absolutely not. And while income can certainly affect how you move through the world, it’s not a reflection of your worth as a person.

So why do so many of us struggle to separate our value from our bank balance? And more importantly, how can we start to unlearn that link?

    Let’s get into it.

Where Did This Idea Come From?

The notion that financial success equals personal success isn’t new. It’s baked into everything from school report cards to how we’re taught to set goals. Capitalism, of course, has a big role to play. Productivity and profit have long been tied to status, identity and self-esteem.

Add social media to the mix and suddenly you're not just earning a living — you're building a “personal brand”, monetising your hobbies, and watching other people casually post about hitting their third property before 30.

It’s no surprise we internalise the idea that our income reflects how worthy or capable we are. But it’s a myth that’s quietly messing with our mental health.

Signs You Might Be Linking Self-Worth to Net Worth

You might not say it out loud, but if any of the following feel familiar, you’re probably caught in the value-income trap:

    • Feeling ashamed of your job title or salary, even if you enjoy what you do

    • Comparing your lifestyle to others and feeling “behind”

    • Tying your sense of achievement to how much you earn, rather than what you contribute

    • Struggling to rest unless you’ve “earned” it through productivity

    • Defining success purely in financial terms

This mindset doesn’t just affect your confidence. It can creep into your relationships, your self-care, and even the decisions you make about your future.

But Isn’t Money… Kind of Important?

Absolutely. Money impacts freedom, stability and access — especially in a cost-of-living crisis. Being financially secure isn’t a shallow goal, it’s a very real need.

But there’s a difference between wanting financial wellness and equating money with identity.

Money is a tool. It can open doors, reduce stress, and offer choice. But it’s not a marker of morality, intelligence or purpose. You can be wildly rich and wildly insecure. You can be financially struggling and deeply fulfilled.

The problem comes when we let money define who we are, instead of support who we are.

Why This Link Is So Damaging

When your self-worth is tied to your earnings, every financial setback feels like a personal failure. Job loss? Rejection? A quiet month in your freelance calendar? These don’t just impact your wallet — they hit your self-esteem. Hard.

    This creates a vicious cycle:

    • You work harder, hustle more, push further to “prove” yourself

    • You neglect rest, creativity or connection

    • Burnout sets in

    • Your productivity drops, your earnings dip, and the shame kicks in

    • Rinse and repeat

This isn’t resilience — it’s pressure disguised as purpose.

So How Do We Actually Unlearn It?

Great question. It’s not easy, especially if you’ve built your identity around achievement. But it is possible, and it starts with a shift in mindset.

    1. Redefine What Success Means to You

Take income out of the equation for a minute. What actually makes you feel proud? Is it being a kind friend? Creating something meaningful? Learning something new?

Try writing your own definition of success that has nothing to do with money. It can be weird, personal, emotional — whatever resonates. Let that guide you, not your payslip.

    2. Practise Self-Worth Hygiene

We’re constantly told to look after our skin or our inbox, but what about our self-worth? Start noticing when you’re being self-critical around money. Catch those thoughts. Challenge them.

Would you judge a friend by how much they earn? Probably not. Extend the same grace to yourself.

    3. Celebrate Non-Financial Wins

Finished a project? Navigated a tough conversation? Took a break when you needed one? That’s success. Create a ritual for recognising these things — a journal, a note in your phone, a conversation with a mate. Your value isn’t just in what you produce — it’s in how you live.

    4. Separate Your Job from Your Identity

You’re allowed to love your work. But it’s not all you are. Your job title, client list, or revenue stream doesn’t capture your full humanity.

When you introduce yourself, try leading with something other than what you do. It’s uncomfortable at first, but it’s a powerful shift.

    5. Consume Consciously

Curate your feeds. If certain content makes you feel like a failure, unfollow or mute. Seek out voices that talk about value beyond capitalism — people who show success in diverse, expansive ways.

The internet is full of highlight reels. Don’t let it become your mirror.
